Do home filters clean out arsenic in tap water?

white cloudy aquarium water?

Hello again! Recently I have been having some trouble with white cloudy water in my aquarium. In my first aquarium (10 gal) I had some plastic plants and a couple rocks. I didn’t cycle it properly with all of the water changes and tests so the water became incredibly yellow and cloudy. I decided to start over in a new 15 gal aquarium. It was my fathers when he was a kid and is a solid 33 years old. It was in perfect condition after being neglected in my grandparents basement for the last 20 years! No cracks or anything! Well anyways, the water is getting cloudy in this aquarium too! It has been open for 2.5 months. Currently it is being properly or rather, more properly cycled. Unfortunately, I had to add all eight fish I had in the ten gallon the day after I opened the 15 gal. So now, all of the levels are a tad high. my levels are:
Nitrate- 10.0-20.0ppm
Nitrite- 0.0ppm
PH- 6.4 (went low after a water change, currently working on it)
Ammonia- 0-0.25
I think the fast transfer of all of the fish contributes to the cloudiness. I have 8 fish in the tank. I am under all circumstances overstocked. I have: 2 serpeas, 2 redeyes, 2 mollies, 1 pleco, and 1 kissing gourami. Ok so now on to equiptment. For filtration I am running an aquaclear 150 with two sponge inserts and 1 carbon. I run it 24/7! For oxygen I am running an air pump with and airstone. This is a planted tank with co2. I am running a DIY co2 system until I get my hands on one of those high end pressurized systems. I do have a check valve in the tubing! I ran the co2 directly to the input on my filter. The plants are: an aqua fern, another fern, a grassy plant, an anubia, and another stem plant that I cant remember the name of, all from petsmart. I also have some rocks in the tank which until recently relized are spray painted. They came with the tank originally. Also another note: All of this stuff worked perfectly for the tank when it was originally run in my house! Although we didn’t have any live plants. I decided to use a fluorite substrate both for looks and functionality. It has the worst dust problem though! (any ideas on that?) As for lighting. I have the original, yes, original fluorescent bulb that came with the hood in like the 70’s! Just to make it even better it doesn’t have a wattage label on it! It is fairly bright and the plants aren’t dead so I think I’m good. As for chemicals I use jungle brand start right, stress zyme, and nutrafin plantGRO iron enriched. Well I need two answers;
1)Why is it cloudy?! Overstocked? Just cycling? Give it time?
2)How can I get the cloudiness out?! Water changes? More chemicals? To much chemicals?
Please help and sorry for the novel of info above! If you need any more info please let me know!
Thankyou!
the filter is rated for 10-30 gallons so i think its sufficient. Im by no means a fish expert though…

I spend to replace the carbon filter on my water filter/pitcher every few months. Would the activated carbon used by home distillers be as good an option to filter my water? The exact brand I’m thinking about is Prestige stone activated carbon (.4-1.4mm), and I would be running it through a coffee filter in the existing housing on my water pitcher.

Can any chemists – amateur or professional – tell me if this would be a good or bad idea?

This 4,000 square foot house has geothermal heat pumps that limit electricity use and provide year-long heat and air conditioning. The system only uses 25% of the electricity that traditional heating and cooling systems use. The home also collects water from it’s showers, sinks and toilets, runs it through an underground filtration system and stores it in a 25,000 gallon cistern with rainwater collected from the roof. The water cistern is later used to irrigate the landscaping around the property.

The other guy has a 10,000 sq. ft., 20 room mansion where the reported electric bill for the year was ,000.00. It used nearly 221,000kWh which is more than 20 times the national average…. and this is just one of his 3 homes. This truley is "an inconvenient truth" for this guy.

Again….. no one talking about this.
these facts don’t fit your point of view JJ? Kind of sucks when you find out your leader is a fraud. But… you have every right to continue to support Gore and his myth… You can find plenty of questions and answers here that are "made up" to fit your agenda…. don’t be bothered with the facts on this one.
uh… Shuana… I’m talking about George Bush’s Home… not the white house… and no… green electricity does not cost 10 times more… actually it’s not quite twice as much…. but even if it was 10 times more…. he still uses 20 times more than the national average…. and I wonder why when this report came out he is suddenly making all these improvements to "green" up his home… yes, I have done my research… you should do more and stop being an appologist for someone who clearly does not believe or support what he preaches… its embarrasing
uh Frankie… where does electricity come from?
JJ…did I at any point in this question link his environmentally sound home to any other statement or decision, good or bad, that he has made to give him a "free pass" on the poor decisions made?

You are the one who is trying to link everything you dissagree with to this question and you are trying to discredit his actions. The way someone personally lives says a lot about them. Al Gore abviously doesn’t put too much stock into his theory.

This question is soley to discuss Al Gore’s Hypocrisy vs. George Bush’s conservation. IT IS CLEAR… NO MATTER HOW MUCH YOU WANT TO TRY AND SPIN IT. If you want to discuss other topics about George or AL ask the question… I’ll look for it.
BTW JJ… read the link provided to you by Scott just below your statement… then ask me about Fossil Fuels.
oh off sets are great huh JJ… so basically…. if you can afford it… you can live any way you like… wow!! That is really caring about the environment huh!

You are so right… more research needed… OH… anything else you would like to give your mentor a free pass on? Does his private Jet run off green fuel too? I’m just curious… oh thats right…. he throws a lot of money into his fake company to "offset" his use…. silly me!

Is this true and if so, what about those home water filter units that you filter tap water yourself like brita or Pur, do those cut out the minerals as well?

Can I somehow get my whites clean in yellow water?

I live in Ft Lauderdale and the city water here is yellow! I have looked into whole house filters but they are very expensive and I can’t make the investment.
I’m frustrated because all of our white clothes are yellowing and I can’t get them white again. When the laundry tub fills up, the water is yellow so no matter what type of detergent I add it just becomes foamy yellow water.

Do you have any suggestions? Coincidentally, we fine broke down and decided that it is time to replace our outdated and inefficient washer and dryer. Maybe we could find one that has built in filtration system….

Thanks!

I am convinced that Sodium Fluoride is harmful to the brain.

http://www.fluoridealert.org/health/brain/

I have this water filter at home in the garage and it’s a water softener that uses the salt pellets. Does this device remove sodium fluoride or just calcium and the other positively charged stuff???

10 pts will be given to the most clear answer!

and i found out that i could get one hundred gallons of water from the local water station for a quarter knowing that most people dont even use two hundred gallons per month but mainly doing this would be cheaper and pay for its self in the long run and i have been trying to figure out how i would lay the system out and get it to work for all my water needs bathroom kitchen and yard my main plan was to buy a new 500 gallon water tank to be stored in a basement and another tank to take on a trailer to fill up and some kind of pump and filtration system along with a decent sized water heater and lay out my pipe and see what i could figure out but my main problem would be how do i get my water to flow like a regular city/or/well water system thank you for your time

I’m concerned by the amount of oil burned to truck and fly bottled water around the world so I would rather just drink tap water. What is the best installed water filter system that doesn’t leave the water with out minerals?

don’t want to taste chlorine or salt from a system, thanks

saltwater aquarium filtration?

I’ve had a 50 gallon saltwater tank for over a year now. Bottom line is I’m not happy with the filtration. I currently have a wet/dry trickle filter with a phospure pad as the filter media. I will sometimes put some carbon in a media bag within the sump as well. I have huge algae, and my water is rarely clear. My live rock is starting to suffer due to the fact that I have to cut so much light time because of the algae outbreaks. I am willing and very interested to hear what you guys recommend for the the intermediate/advanced aquarium filter set up. I think a UV filter will be necessary and also a r/o water system, but I have no idea how those works; do they hook up to the filter system somehow or just to a water source in the house? Again, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I understand it’s pretty much just filtered poo, right? What kinds of horrible things make it through to your tap? Chlorine? Bacteria? Fecal particles? Other stuff?

And which of these things do home water filters remove?
How do those things end up in your water?

Have you ever had an in-home water filtration sales pitch? What did you think? Did you purchase? Does it work?
I do have a Marine Reef Aquarium that requires 0 TDS, which them claim this system will provide. If this were the case then it could save me money in the long run while providing the rest of the home with soft water.
Oh, and Nelis, they offered us the same soap and shampoo deal, 10yrs of stuff I likely won’t use. Flags started to fly when I get that "Shamwow" vibe.
Jason : Yes staingless, Yes, Yes, and Yes. It is top-of-the-line this I have confirmed but, I don’t know how much it should cost.

If you could have 3 things added/installed to your home for free (green ventures are expensive) What would they be?

I would want my house solar powered, Have the best water filtration system out there, and have all my pipes/plumbing in the house replaced to stainless steel… (where possible) :~)

(If I could change my whole house – I’d want it to be eco friendly and made with the least amount of chemicals possible)

How about you?
Great answers everyone! Made you think….. ;~)

i would like some diagrams if possible, its a unit that will be installed under the kitchen sink

The water from the public supply line is full of sediments and very turbid. It cannot be used for washing utensils or clothes. A simple filtration is required atleast the water can be used for washing and for drinking as well.

I’m finding great info on manufactured/mobile homes here. So, anyone know where I can begin to search and choose a good contractor to make repairs and update my home? I have no clue how to go about looking for a person or company to do this. How could I find out if they are any good, quality, reasonable prices?

Repairs include: Tie-down, whole house filtration system, remodel space to fit the water heater and filtration system, carpeting, new shower/tubliners, new sinks, etc.

I’ve watched that show Flip This House and one lady had a contractor she worked with. He directed everything. Basically all she had to do was pay for the materials, his service, the workers (plumber/tile) and paint herself here and there.

Your insights are appreciated!

Are portable water bottle filters convenient?

I’ve seen multiple portable water bottle brands that come with an insertable water filter. However, I know that with my water pitcher filter at home, it takes a little bit of time for the water to drip down and filter. Is this the case with these portable bottles as well?

Also, none of these brands state which type of filter they sell/use. Does anyone know which manufacturer sells purified, ceramic, or reverse osmosis filters?

Thanks!

Everything has been removed Kitchen, floorings, subfloor, Everything in Bathrooms, all walls I washed with vinegar and soapy water. The house has been vacant 3 years and I am trying to have it be fresh and rennovated by fall which means I have 2 months. Nothing new has been reinstalled. There is no sign of water damage ever – only a spot where cats peed so we tore up all the plywood underlayment to eliminate that. The house is very airtight and has been closed up for 3 years. What am I doing wrong. How can I remove the closed up camper / hotel room stench. Large fans to try to circulate air and candles and Febreze is not eliminating the stench. We leave windows open for airflow as well. I am not living there but eventually I will need to so please any ideas what I am missing. I had furnace man come and give price on air filtration to remove 99% of smells from existing air for the forced air system but does anyone know about those working? They are a couple thousand so I was concerned.
Its 28 years old and after washing all the walls I painted them. Still bad air though. All the damage drywall from old tub leak was tore out.
I painted all the existing dry clean plywood with kilz paint sealer – there was no sign of damage on those at all and where is was – it was replaced with new.
