I think I’ve added the right amount of conditioning salt to my 25-gal aquarium, but I mistakenly soaked a pouch of carbon in salt water and then put it in the sunshine to recharge. I rinsed it before putting it back in the filter. What should I do now?

water quality in saltwater aquarium

Male Red Eared Slider, about 5 inches long. He’s in an aquarium w/ filter, water heater, heat lamp. I have been wondering what’s going on because I have never seen him come out of the water to bask. Thought maybe he was doing it at night, nope. I put food on his basking rock (actually a piece of ceramic tile) and did not feed him Saturday or Sunday. Came in Monday and the food is still there. He is a beggar and always hungry, he would’ve ate that food, believe me. Now I know he’s not getting out of the water. At first I had plastic floating thing that attaches to the side of the tank. He couldn’t fit on it side to side. His body was too wide for it and when I put him on it, he slid right off. Now I have a big square piece of ceramic tile on a glass to hold it up. The water is almost level with the top of the tile, so that it’s like the tile is floating on top of the water. I don’t know if he can’t get up there. I try to put him up there and he immediately dives back into the water. I don’t know what to do at this point except maybe try another method for a way for him to climb out. Tried rocks piled to side, didn’t work and was very messy. Took most rocks out to make tank care easier. I think I will put him in a box today for a couple of hours to let him dry out. Help!!
Yes! I gave him some guppies which he is too lazy to chase. I also put more water so it is just barely covering top of tile. I thought he would climb up there and eat the pellets I left him over the weekend, but someone on here said that they can’t eat out of the water! Now I know! He seems fine, I just hate that he’s never drying off! I thought they had to or they will get shell rot. I would just feel sooo bad if he got sick b/c of something I did or did not do, and it worries me that he will not get out of the water, even for food!! He’s so greedy, he will eat right out of my hand. I’m definitely going to look for better basking set up this weekend, maybe a big flat rock instead of tile on top of a cup. I am also getting better heat lamp, the one my coworkers gave is not giving off much heat.

Do they make reverse osmosis units that do not have to be installed into my existing home plumbing system? I am wanting one for my saltwater tank, so I don’t need anything that is permanent. I have never used or dealt with one of these before so I am clueless. Do they make a kind that I can pour the water into it and the unit purifies it and pumps it into a container? As many details as possible would be great. Thanks in advance.

He said he knew how to install the filter and what should be done. I trusted him! Within 36 hrs. the hose busted and my entire house flooded in the middle of the night. I had the filter for 10 yrs without using it. It is guaranteed for life so I wasn’t concerned. The installer said he checked the filter and hose before installing it and they were fine.

We took in a foster cat for a short time until his new home is ready for him. He’s used to being around people and other animals. He is in our attached garage which is just used for storage boxes and stuff and exersize equipment. We made it as homey as we could for him. I have 6 other cats and don’t want to introduce the two and cause undue stress on my cats or the foster one when he’d be leaving in a month anyway.

But lately he’s been nipping at me around my knees when I go to leave. I know this is due to the stress of the new environment and not having as much attention as he used to. I’ve heard that lavendar in a little water helps with stress in cats. Spraying it on the stuff they lay on etc. Just wondering if this is true and is it safe? What other natural remedies can we do to help him. He’s only going to be here for a month. I know that feilway spray works but I don’t want to buy anything expensive. Any ideas would help.

I have a private well system here in Wasilla, AK and I am not happy with the water quality. I used a shower filter to remove chlorine etc when I lived in California but that is not the problem now. The water causes dry skin, tastes horrible and seems to have a lot of calcium and iron in it. I had some tests done and was offered a Water conditioner that uses polymer beads and a seperate system that uses reverse osmosis to filter and soften all of the water in the house. This will cost around 00 is that the best way to go or does anyone know of a better option? I do want to filter all of the water in the house for drinking, cooking, bathing laundry etc. Are there certain things I need to leave in the water for health reasons? Is it ok to strip the water of as many minerals etc as I can?
