Can I somehow get my whites clean in yellow water?
I live in Ft Lauderdale and the city water here is yellow! I have looked into whole house filters but they are very expensive and I can’t make the investment.
I’m frustrated because all of our white clothes are yellowing and I can’t get them white again. When the laundry tub fills up, the water is yellow so no matter what type of detergent I add it just becomes foamy yellow water.
Do you have any suggestions? Coincidentally, we fine broke down and decided that it is time to replace our outdated and inefficient washer and dryer. Maybe we could find one that has built in filtration system….
Thanks!

Bleach is really harsh on some fabrics so check the clothing labels first. You can also add Borax to your wash, or bluing. Bluing is what has been used for centuries to get clothes white. The name sounds like it turns your clothes blue but that’s a misconception. Both can be found in the laundry aisle.
try some bleach
use bleach or go to the laundromat to do your whites
It really depends on why your clothes are turning yellow. They could be turning yellow due to tannins, which are in ground water. Tannins aren’t likely the problem, but you never know.
There are products sold at Ace Hardware or water softener supply stores that would help. If the problem is tannins, use Rust Aid (it is AMAZING). If that isn’t the problem, try Yellow Out. Bleach will likely not do any good and could even make the problem worse.
Good luck!
I wonder if a Shout stain catcher sheet would work?
First you need to find out what is making the water yellow in the first place. If it’s rust, then you can get a rust remover to add to your laundry. If it’s hard water, then they make a softener to add to laundry too. They are both in the detergent aisle.
I don’t think they make a washer with a filtration system.
Also, whole house filtration systems are not that expensive (see link below).
