Help! Friend issues are buggin me : P?
Hey,
So my friend is going back to college, and wants a betta fish. Well, getting the fish or not is not up for consideration, she intends to get the fish no matter what. It’s the only pet she can have there, and plans to go through with it regardless of what I say or show her ( my many guys and gals are living like kings and queens in 5 and 6 gallon filtered and heated homes).
The thing is, she’s perpetually broke.
So, I’m going to get her the heater no mater what, that’s not a problem. At the very least, they’ll be the proper temp.
The problem is the actual housing.
She wants to get either the 1.5 water wonders tank with filter http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3804454 or a larger roughly 4 gallon glass bowl she saw at Home Goods.
Either way, they work out to be about the same price, so no help there.
What’s better for the betta fish? Space or filtration?
I’m a poor college student myself, so helping out with a heater for her x-mas present is as far as I can really go (I’m tapped out after x-mas shopping).
In the long run, what’s best for the betta’s health; about 4 gallons of water to stretch his fins out so to speak, but no filtration, or a smaller tank that has a filter?
Help! I want to steer her in the best direction : (
13.99 is for just the glass, not lid, no light. and since betta’s are jumpers, that a majot no-no. a ten galloon with the cheaoest top is about 30$, beyond her budget.
And I wish any were near me sold a plain rectangular 5 gallon, but no such luck, they’re all expensive kits like the eclispe ones.

For every inch of the length of the fish, it will need a gallon of water. Betta fish are simple fish that need simple housing so filtration is not an issue. She should buy the 4 gallon glass tank and she will need to clean about every week, just a simple scrub. AND MAKE SURE: Only have one Betta fish per tank, because they eat each other. Hope this helps!
Go for the 1.5 with filter. Tell her to save some money before she buys because chemicals alone can cost a fair bit. Make sure she knows what shes doing and all that. At the end of the day she can upgrade when she gets some money. Nice to see you buying a heater for the fish that’s great. I had a look at the 1.5 and it don’t seem to bad. Take out the plastic plants though because they can tear fins, maybe replace with a little anubias. Goodluck
Bowls have a low surface area to volume ratio which means less oxygen then a square or rectangular tank and small bottoms for gravel on which good bacteria can colonize.
Smaller tank with filtration would be the best. If she has the space, a 5 or 10 gallon tank (the rectangular kind) is cheaper than the 1.5 tank she wants.
i got my betta’s in 5 litre tanks and they are fine
Buying a filter, heater and a 10 gallon tank is going to better in the long run and it will come up close to 24.99 that the 1.5 gallon tank is.
At Petsmart
10 gallon tank: $13.99
Filter: 14.99
Heater: 20.00 ish
48.98 is the total price.
