I have Well Water at my house. I have been living here for 9 yrs and have had a huge problem with the smell?
of the water…we have it tested every once in a while and nothing ever shows up…my clothes coming from the wash are disgusting and only the Master bathroom has smelly water..our well guy told us to pour bleach into the well..we did and seized the motor. Had to get a new pump. We ran bleach throughout out water filtration system. Still the same. We believe it could only be one thing that could be causing this…bad water coming in from the well.. maybe bacteria or something..so we would need to drill in a new spot…could it be anything else????????? I have had it with smelly water and want to sell my house…

You need to find out what they’re testing for.
They’re usually testing for pathogens and heavy metals. It could be that you have sulfur in the local area which will make the water unpleasant smelling.
There are places that treat for this, and other things, but I’d suggest knowing more about your water.
Before that you should be able to get a "reverse osmosis" system for your household drinking water that should take care of any smell problems for cooking and drinking.
hey if ya wanna know why it smells bad guess what its from the earth so don’t expect it to smell like perfume so just get rid of the house problem solved
Peter’s right, you need to check what analysis is being carried out. I’d go for some sort of sulphur compound or mercaptans, but you need to get the analysis done to be sure
I have well water and it is the iron you are smelling. You can get a house filter installed (Homedepot) but you will have to change the cartridge at least once a month. Iron has rusted our bathtub and sometimes white clothes comes out a bit yellow and that is why I would put bleach in the washer. Never put bleach in the well.
If your well is shallow I would look really hard at a new well.
If you well is ok and you have had the water tested you probably have minerals causing the issue.
I would do the following.
1. A whole house filter. You can get one for under 100 bucks but you need to look at replacement filters as well as part of the cost.
2. A water softener. You are looking at almost a grand and 5 bucks a month for salt.
3. Look into a reverse osmosis system.
I had the same problem. it is probably iron. I installed an iron remover and a water softener. no more rusty tub, sink or clothes. and no smell.
The bleach probably had nothing to do with the motor. It kills bacteria and then breaks down to table salt and water. Without knowing what the water smells like, I can’t advise you. Is there a large water supplier in your area? If so, fill a glass jar with a water sample, cover the mouth with plastic wrap, and screw the lid on. Arrange to see the company’s laboratory. If they are big enough, they will have a special taste and smell lab that can tell you what the other labs should be testing for. You might even get an answer to your problem.
