Reverse osmosis is just a name for "forcing" osmosis to happen by adjusting the pressure on one side of the transfer. Either by increasing pressure on the supply side, or decreasing it on the output. A good system will involve a small pump and a resivoir. The pump drops pressure on the demand side, and draws the filtered water into the resivoir, which is kept under pressure so that you’ll have pressure at the tap.
Installation will involve running the supply line to the filter, a line from the filter to the pump, from the pump to the resivoir, and from the resivoir to the tap. And running an electrical line to the pump.
Some units combine some of these functions, and you may just have to run a line in, a line out, and plug it in.
There are also companies that offer whole house filtration systems, where the water is filtered on the line into the house, so all the water you use is purified.
