My girlfriend just got me a 12 gallon Nano Cube Deluxe for Christmas. It should be delivered to my house soon. I’ve owned tropical fish as a child and I’m barely getting back into the interest of keeping small fish again in my early 30’s – so yes, I’m a novice with little experience. I know for beginners, it is recommended to get a 20+ gallon tank. However, I live in a one bedroom apartment with limited room so I thought this nano cube would best fit. I’ve done some research and found that people have successfully kept a pair of Rams in 12 gallon eclipse systems with some neon tetras. Would someone please (with personal experience & knowledgeable) let me know what fish (that looks good & is compatible with Rams) are small enough and hardy to successfully cycle a tank before introducing the German Blue Rams? FYI, I don’t plan on keeping live plants. I want this to be a clean and simple setup.

Also, anyone with experience with the Nano Cube 12g Deluxe (for fresh water) can let me know if there is an opening in the back of this tank to put an air tube through for an external air pump for a decorate air stone or something? From all the pictures (which are mostly marine setups), it appears that no one has air bubbles being pumped in. Don’t mean to sound like a big-time novice, but is there some type of technology in the 3-stage filtration system in the rear that oxygenates the water or something? My online research won’t turn anything up on this? Please help…

Any additional tips would be helpful.

HELP, fish keep dying in tropical tank?

Help my poor fish keep dying.I have a 200lt tropical tank set up with the required heating and filtration system. It houses 6 zebra dandeos, 2 barbs, 4 guppies& 2 gouramies. I use aquarium salt and do a third water change every two weeks using water conditioner every time. However my fish keep dying at what is an alarming rate.(At least one a week) They have a healthy varied diet of flakes an live food.I have noticed a day before they die there scales develop this dull sheen and they quieten right down. Please help my poor fishies?
Sorry, forgot to mention that have had fin rot before and this is nothing like it. Fish are relatively untouched when they die, no sign of rot or any deteoration aside from the dull scales
N.B. Am only using a very small amount of aquarium salt(not the same as a salt water tank)as advised by our local aquarium as this is how the fish had been kept up untill we purchased them. I understand that a tropical tank is one that has a temperature that must be maintained as opposed to a salt water tank (which contains salt water fish )
Tank has been set up for two years and the fish dying has only happened in the last month

The one i’m currently using is chrome (sold in Lowes stores). My wife and I decided to replace our sink and faucet, we chose the Moen nickel-played faucet not thinking about the water filtration system we currently have.

I think I’m going to take my fish (saltwater) home for my thanksgiving break. its 9 days. The ride is about 2 and a half hours without traffic. Never know how chicago traffic is gunna be so maybe tack on sometime to be safe. The man at the aquatics store i get my fish from said i would need to get some buckets and put the water in there and the fish in there and than bring the tank (with only enough water in it to keep the rocks wet) cuz if I leave the water in the tank he said it would crack. I have a 20 gallon by the way. So i would bring the tank and than a bin or bucket or 2 of the water. and than the stuff i need for them. One of the questions i have is how long can they last without the filtration system running? and another question is, if i bought a decent size one of these

http://www.petco.com/Shop/AlternateImages.aspx?FamilyID=12031&sku=796476

would they be able to live if i put the filter in there? or maybe just for them to travel in. I was just wondering that because it was just an idea so I wouldnt have to bring the whole tank. I dont think it would work but I just wanted to know. Will it put too much stress on the fish to move them?

If you guys had to transfer your fish, how would you do it? Should i do it the way i explained? And finally, will transfering them do anything to the chemical balances of the water? like the ph or anything that the cycle i had to wait for did to the water?

thanks for your help!

I went to Sears and they had individual reverse-osmosis filters for under your kitchen sink that go for -300 that take filters changes every 6 months or else they’ve got a central water whole home filtration system that costs 0 but is self-cleaning, does the whole house, and doesnt need changing for over 10 years. I want to have water be drinkable in the house and don’t mind it just coming from the kitchen. But I could see my family and I flaking on changing the filters. But I’m guessing just one at the sink would taste better than one for the entire house. Here’s the links I’m looking at: http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_04238556000P?vName=Appliances&cName=Water+Treatment

I’m asking to find out how long it would take a professional to do the installment.

I have two quotes so far; in Kissimmee, FL.

One person said he’ll do it for a flat fee of 0.

The second person said he’ll do it for an hour.

What are your thoughts? How much should the installation be if those quotes are incorrect and how long would it take to install both the water softener and water filtration?

If it helps; the water softener and water filtration are Waterpool-Kenmore products bought from Lowes.

Thank you for your responses.
