I have just had about a hundred Zebra Danio eggs start hatching. They are not swimming yet. I know not to feed them til they swim.
I bought powdered egglayer fry food but I think this will still be too big the first week or two. I called many pet stores in this area and nobody has any liquid food.
I appreciate any tips and answers to the original question. I have had fish and many live births for 15 years but this is the first time I tried to raise egg layer fish from fry. All I have googled does not help with this problem, just gives general directions.

Also, I bought a small air powered sponge/carbon filter. When will they be strong enough to put that in? It is weak. You can see it just barely pull small particles into it. I have it running in my main tank to get seeded by bacteria. I want to keep the water quality as smooth as possible. No spikes or drops from water changes! I had to set this baby tank up FAST, I was not totally prepared.

Thank you experts.

My 28 gallon tank is still in the early cycle stages with 4 zebra danios, 3 mickeys, 3 catfish and 1 fish that the clerk at Petsmart (Yeah, I know!) told me would eat the black ramshorn snails that infested my tank. I removed the plants that had snail egg sacks today and bought new plants.

I was told that plants would help speed up the tank’s cycle and cut down the ammonia and nitrite levels. I did a 25% water change yesterday too. Do I do a daily 1-2 gallon water change for the next 3 weeks? Also my carbon filter gets gross about every 3-4 days. Do I change that often too? Here is what the Petsmart clerk told me to do: add 3 capfuls of Cycle every day for 3 weeks and do a weekly water change of only 10%. I dosed the tank with Prime instead. I have to be patient I know while the tank finishes cycling for what, the next 3-4 weeks? My ammonia detector is at "alert" and the NH3 detector is light green "stress." Daily 1-2 gallon water changes? Prime once a week? What should I do?

I just cleaned my 3 gallon tank that my betta lives in. He had Melafix last week so I couldn’t use the carbon. I did about a 50% water change and added new water. But, there are waste flying around. I cleaned it with a gravel cleaner for about 30 mins. and used the siphon to take out the old water. Is it okay to leave it like this? I did replace the carbon filter and it does look better, but I am afraid the waste just settled under the gravel again. Anyway, I also added salt to my water, of course, water conditioner and live bacteria. So, is it okay?
I can’t do another water change tomorrow or anything because I am going on a 5 day trip and the person feeding my fish knows nothing about fish.

Yes, i have a undergravel filter, which is powered by an air pump. (I only have a 10-15 gallon air pump, in a 29 gallon tank. But i don’t that makes a difference, becasue it should just blow out the same amount of air through the 2 tubes) But when i put the carbon cartridges on, it slows down the flow of the filtering water (Bubbles come out every 2-3 seconds, i thought it would come out all the time and have a pretty good current). Then i read that if there isn’t a good current going through the cartridges the carbon cartridges will actully be toxins for the fish. So what should i do to help. Is the undergravel filter still cleaning the tank without the cartridges, or should i get a bigger air pump which will help the current of the water through the cartridges? Please help….
Yes i also have a filter going on also, and it have rosy and tiger barbs with rasaboras….
Do I really need the carbon cartridges on the filter tubes…

My external filter has three compartments: the first is where you put the black sponge; the second is a huge bag of active carbon wrapped in some wool; and the third is full of bio rings.

I know that the active carbon is meant to take out odor and water impurities and that it also takes out medicine.

My live plants seem to be dying in my tank so i want to ask –

What is the point of active carbon?
Does it take the plant’s nutrients out the water and end up killing them?
Can My fish live without it?
what can i put in it’s place?

Any knowledge would be excellent!

Thanks!

I recently got a new tank with a under gravel filter, and I put the carbon filters in my old tank (with fish still in it) for three days, added stones and rocks from the old tank to the new tank, and put several gallons of water from the old tank to the new tank. I also took a few bio-balls from the old tank, and the new tank has been planted and proper chemicals have been added.

So my question is, how much longer will it take to cycle the new tank? I know it is a month or so for a brand new tank, but since all nessicary bacterias have been added, how much time will it take?

My house was built in the 50s with a koi pond on the front patio before koi ponds were trendy. There is no filtration or waterfall. The electric outlet outside the pond is broken. The only thing we have to filter the pond is a pipe in the pond that acts as a slow drain. There are 12 fish in the pond and they are very healthy. They’ve been there for 2 years and have had 3 babies. Even though I scrape the bottom of the pond for debris and skim the top once a week, the water is brown and murky. I add new water to keep the drain going and I use a water treater and a barley/health bacteria treatment. There is some minor algae build-up on the sides, but no plants. However, when it rained last week, the pond was clear for about 3 days. Why was the pond clear after it rained and how can I keep it clear?
I should clarify that there are 9 adult comet goldfish and 3 babies, not full-sized koi.
I watch my fish. They eat everything I feed them. Nothing (but their poop) drops to the ground.
