Hi. I have searched far and wide but still can’t seem to find exactly what I want. I would like an under sink water filter. It must fit in a 20" high cabinet. It must be full flow rate or at least not severely retard the flow of water as it will be used as a regular cold tap. It must be fitted in line with the cold water service. It must not require me to bore a hole in my counter top, I don’t want a separate faucet next to my sink. It must meet NSF standards 42 and 53. Activated carbon is fine as reverse osmosis is overkill. Thanks!

My mother used to insist that it was dangerous to start with hot water, rather than cold, when boiling water for pasta and other things requring boiling water. She insisted hot water contained all sorts of dangerous chemicals that cold water didn’t, presumably from the pipes or water heater. My mother had a lot of nutty ideas, but I have somehow observed her rule on this one all these many years. Were her warnings valid? Nowadays I have a carbon filter that all my water goes through before going to the tap or, in the case of hot water, the water heater. Does that make a difference?

Hi there,
Could someone explain this in "simple" terms? I’ve read about it and am not coming too far. I’m preparing my tank for discus but wonder if I should move to another kind of cichlid instead that doesn’t require such delicate conditions. I’m worried that I will kill my fish with any water changes. My Tap PH is somewhere around 7.6 or a bit higher. With the use of pete it’s now between 6.4 and 6.8. My trusted fish store "who hasn’t steared me wrong yet" has told me not to worry too much as his discus are used to a harder water, but still I worry about it fluctuating too much and killing them. I think I’m too inexperienced to do it on my own, even now with research and annoying everyone with my questions. Is my external Eheim biological filter already doing the R.O.? If I did chose to stock with a different kind of cichlid, which should I choose so I don’t have to worry too much about PH? Thanks again.

I live in a hurricane zone where flooding is natural because of a valley. It is now hurricane season. The situation in Missouri,Ohio, and some of the states that got flooded[by rivers] has heightened my awareness of the need for a water purification system.Bottled water is expensive[about for 5 gallons] and we drink 20 gallons or more easily in a week. We got a Culligan system with a pitcher but it needed filters. We never figured out how to install the under the tap Culligan[ and my brother is both intelligent and good with his hands]. I have searched the internet but I do not want to spend money on something that is advertised as the best but complex to use or expensive [needing filters every 4-6 weeks]].We need a system that will give a warning when the filter needs changing. Is there anyone who uses a ‘great’ system or who can give some suggestions? We want to be prepared for any emergency. Help!

I went shopping with some friends.

They bought bottled water and I joked with them about how they don’t drink from the tap.

They basically said the bottled water is cleaner and different from the tap…so they drink from the bottled water most of the time and the sink every once in a while. (They use Brita with the sink, though).

So then I try to convince them that the Brita filtered water is the same crap as what’s in the bottles, and they believe me.

SO, I offer the idea of getting a stainless steel water bottle so they can take it to class with them (they got bottles so they can carry it to school) and I was like, "the bottle will last 1000 years so you never have to waste your money on the bottled water."

Know what they said? "Oh, but I don’t need something to last that long."

Look, the only two companies that have pure filtered water are Dasani and Aquafina. Dasani is reverse osmosis filtered water with minerals added, but Aquafina is reverse osmosis filtered with nothing added. (They didn’t understand reverse osmosis or the idea of added minerals).

Is it wrong for me to be bothered that the general population thinks just like they do and is wasting oil for these dang bottles of water?

I just installed a DuPont under sink water filter. It’s a single stage with a carbon block filter and it came with its own faucet. Per the instructions I ran 5 gallons of water through the filter before using. I purchased a TDS meter and tested the water straight from the tap it was reading 120 and from the filter its was reading 155. I re-calibrated the meter and the results were similar. I returned the meter thinking its defective. New meter same thing. Returned the second meter and purchased a different brand for more money. Same results. Ran another 10 gal trough the filter no change. Tap reads between107 – 120 and filtered reads 140-155. Does this make sense?

My water comes from a well in my yard and has a typical TDS value of 100-140 range.
I have installed a 2 stage micro biological filter that has a 5 micron particle and carbon filters.
After the installation I am getting a higher TDS reading from my filtered water (180-190) which is appox. 40 points higher than the untreated well water from tap.
There is no measuring error since I use the same TDS meter for measuring both sources.
Filter instructions states that I should run 7 gallons of water through the filter before it performs proper filtration.
While the initial numbers I read of 600-500 came down to 180-190 it is still higher than unfiltered water.
Does this make sense? How long does a basic water filter takes before it reaches to full performance?

I was looking at my reverse osmosis water filter, one connect to the tap and the other one connect to a pail, probably for disposal. Is the water we suppose to drink from the filter acidic or alkaline?
